The Greater Bullitt County Youth Football League based in Shepherdsville, KY, is committed to ensure a positive youth football experience and advance player safety this fall by providing league-wide coaching education and teaching resources that benefit players, parents and coaches through USA Football’s Heads Up Football® program.

USA Football, the sport’s national governing body and a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee, educates more youth and high school coaches combined than any organization in the United States. GBCYFL includes 12 district teams comprised of more than 700 players and 100 coaches throughout Bullitt County, KY.

The GBCYFL coaches will be trained in Heads Up Football® techniques before leading their teams this season. The GBCYFL head coaches and assistant coaches will complete USA Football’s Youth Tackle Certification Course, which includes Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) concussion recognition and response protocols; heat illness prevention information; proper helmet and shoulder pad fitting; as well as Shoulder Tackling, Defeating Blocks and Blocking techniques, which aim to reduce helmet contact.

Heads Up Football has earned the support from three of the largest U.S.-based sports medicine organizations: the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and the National Athletic Trainers' Association. Combined, these three organizations comprise more than 50,000 members across 90 countries spanning 70 occupations within sports medicine.

“The safety and development of our youth athletes is our #1 priority.” Amanda Serafin, GBCYFL, Commissioner. “To have all the coaches take the time to be up to date in the latest safety and development techniques means so much.”

“Having youth leagues nationwide enroll in Heads Up Football is an important step to advance student-athletes’ physical literacy and enjoyment of our sport,” said USA Football CEO SCOTT HALLENBECK. “We are proud to have The Greater Bullitt County Youth Football League join us in leading America’s youth football community, helping to further establish important standards rooted in education for the good of our young athletes.”

Key Feature

Coaching Certification

  • Coaches are trained to teach the game’s fundamentals by completing USA Football’s nationally accredited Level 1 Coaching Certification Course.

Educational Components

CDC concussion recognition and response

  • Coaches learn and are assessed on CDC concussion recognition and response through USA Football’s Level 1 Coaching Certification Course.

Heat preparedness and hydration protocols

  • Coaches learn heat and hydration safety measures provided by the University of Connecticut’s Korey Stringer Institute.

Sudden cardiac arrest protocols

  • Instruction on how to have plans and procedures in place to quickly react in the case of cardiac events, the No. 1 cause of death for children and teens taking part in athletics.

Proper equipment fitting

  • Coaches are taught proper helmet and shoulder pad fitting.

Shoulder tackling, blocking and defeating blocks

  • Series of fundamental drills reinforce tackling, defeating blocks and blocking mechanics, teaching players who to perform these basic football skills with a focus on reducing helmet contact.

Practice Planning

  • Coaches learn how to select drills and build practice plans appropriate to their players’ development and physical literacy, including how to use non-contact and limited-contact instruction to teach fundamental skills.

Coaching Kids

  • Children are not mini-adults. Young athletes learn in progressions, just as they do in the classroom. Building trust as an instructor starts with teaching in a developmentally appropriate way, which matches their physical and cognitive abilities.
